  Anderson County Court House

Anderson County, named after United States Congressman        Richard Clough Anderson, was formed from parts of Franklin, Mercer and Washington Counties in 1817. Lawrenceburg (our county seat), named after Captain James Lawrence, commander of the US Naval Ship the Chesapeake, was established in 1820.

The Construction of the first Courthouse began in 1828, completed on July 12, 1830, was built by Robert Logan at the cost of $3000.00, and was constructed of brick. The Courthouse burned the night of October 26, 1859. A new Courthouse was completed on January 3, 1861 by John Haly of Frankfort for $14,000.00. This new Courthouse was constructed from Kentucky River Stone. It was remodeled in 1905 by C.E. Bond with some minor changes being made. The building was again destroyed by fire on April 13, 1915. This, the third and existing Courthouse, was built by A.J. Stair of Knoxville Tennessee for $39,146.00 using the stone walls that were left standing after the fire.

The movie the Flim-Flam Man was filmed in Lawrenceburg in 1967 using the Courthouse in many scenes. Such stars as Harry Morgan and George C. Scott were actors in this film.
